Serei um burro vendado incaracterizável?

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

9 minutes of fame

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

9minutesoffame.comI was wandering around on the web when I found this curious website. It is called "9 minutes of fame" and it consists in give the users/visitors the opportunity to have 9 minutes of fame in this site. Basically, visitors submit theirs website and the website that gets selected is shown on 9minutesoffame.com during the next 9 minutes. When this 9 minute period ends, submissions are open again and the first website to be submited is the one being shown for the next period of 9 minutes.

Besides the funny part of trying it out for 1 or 2 times, there isn’t much to do on this website, other than wait 9 minutes to see what’s the next website to be displayed. But the reason why I decided to blog this was because of its originality. Nowadays when a new project is successful, lots of people start to build clones of this projects/services, so it is nice to find a completely different idea like this one.

Update: I forgot to put the link, so here it his: http://9minutesoffame.com

Redirecting my blog feeds to FeedBurner

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

I just moved my feeds to FeedBurner, so I can get some statistics of its usage. You can do this by either using the WordPress FeedBurner Plugin, or by adding some lines to your .htaccess file. I have decided to go with the second one, since it takes less time. The changes made to my .htaccess file were:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !feedBurner [NC]
RewriteRule ^feed/?$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/vitorrodrigues/blog [R=302,L]
RewriteEngine Off

One year after…. 20 degrees less

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

torontoweather.jpgExactly one year ago, I was making fun of some friends in Portugal because they were complaining about the cold and rain and I was going to work every day wearing just shorts and t-shirt. This was December!… in California!

Today, one year later, my friends in Portugal have the same cold and rain and I have…. the opposite of last year :-) -8C in the middle of the afternoon and in a Sunny day. My "record" was -13C last Monday, but I’m kind of looking forward to the -20/-30s of January.

It is a nice experience tough.

For the curious, the Firefox extension I use to display the Weather information is the popular FoxCast.

Flickrfox

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

flickrfox.jpg Flickrfox is a nice Firefox extension that lets you browse Flickr photos and displays them in a sidebar. You can choose to display photos from your stream, your groups, everyone else photos and from the explore/interestingness page. I currently have it displaying the most interesting photos. It’s a nice way of filling up the microbreaks during the day.

THE OLD TAILOR

Friday, December 1st, 2006

Originally uploaded by SkyShaper.
I’m fascinated with some HDR pictures I have seen in Flickr in the last weeks. They are absolutelly beautiful!

For the ones who are not familiar with the technique, it consists of creating an image from multiple shots of the same subject taken with different exposures. This allows us to highlight the sadows and darken the highlights, giving an homogenous light source to the subject. The different exposed picture can be merged with Adobe Photoshop or Photomatix being the second one the most popular HDR tool.

It’s true that most of the times the resulting pictures don’t look real, but there have been some astonishing HDR pictures on the Flickr explore page lately.

Amazon(s)

amazon_ca.jpg

Just the other day Paulo was telling how much he likes Amazon and how good Amazon‘s customer service is. I also agree that Amazon is a great shop, with good prices and very fast shipments. BUT, not all Amazon websites/shops are the same. I’m a frequent user of Amazon.com and the service is excellent. However, when it comes to the neigbour country, where online shops are not mainstream, Amazon.ca provides just an average service. If the first time I used them the shipment time was reasonable (less than 5 days to ship), this time is way bellow reasonable. I placed an order on November 7th and the expected delivery date is from Dec 13 to Jan 2. This is not good service. The funny thing is that I was going to place the order with some other non-amazon shops  at amazon.ca but then, because the total price was the same (books were cheaper on non-amazon stores but shipment was more expensive) I decided to stay with amazon, because their service tends to be good.

If it wasn’t for the customs hassle, it would be more convenient and fast to order the items at Amazon.com, not to talk about the huge number of titles not available at Amazon.ca.

Gmail – Related pages

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

gmail_related_pages.jpgI’m sure that all of us that use Gmail have noticed the sponsored links on the right handside of the screen when browsing the our mail on gmail.com. However, what I had never noticed was the appearance of a "Related Pages" section bellow the sponsored links. It also displays context sensitive links, but not to paid ads. Instead, it displays links to news related with the content of your email (or sort of related :-) ). In my case, I was reading an email writen in portuguese and the "Related Pages" entries were links to news in two portuguese newspapers.

This feature is not announced on the Gmail What’s New page, so I’m not sure for how long it has been there but today it was the first time I noticed it.

Rogers Portable Internet

Friday, November 10th, 2006

In a country where UMTS/Edge is only a dream and a really expensive GPRS plan is the best wireless data plan you can get, there is solution that becomes very handy for those living in the Greater Toronto Area. The name is Rogers Portable Network, and it consists of a wireless modem capable of receiving rogers wireless internet signal anywhere in the Toronto area. You just need to plug the modem to the power outlet and voila, you have internet access at 1.5Mbps. The modem can then be connected to your laptop/desktop using an ethernet cable.

After just a few hours of use, the pros and cons I found are:

Pros:

  • ease of installation. It only takes a few seconds. Just plug to the power and it works. I’m still questioning myself why don’t I have to insert my username anywhere. Maybe Rogers does modem based authentication and since I  activated my modem at the store, it assigned it to my account.
  • promotion prices. First month for free and $20/month for the first 6 months.
  • just get a car AC adapter and you have internet anywhere in Toronto. Imagine parking your car in front of Lake Ontario and surf the net.
  • portability: you can take your internet with you anywhere you go. Starbucks, friend’s house, etc…

Cons:

  • speed. Although the advertised is 1.5Mbps, some online tests only reported about 750Kbps download and 125Kbps upload.
  • price: after the first 5 months, the price is $50/month.
  • connectivity: only 1 ethernet port. I would be great if it had an integrated wireless router, allowing you to have a wireless home network. You need an additional wireless router to achieve that.
  • size: it is slightly bigger than average DSL modems. A pcmcia card version would be just great.
