Live from NPUC 2006

Today I’m at NPUC 2006 -
New Paradigm in Using Computers, taking place in the IBM Almaden
Research Lab, Calfornia. This year’s session is entitled "Power to the
users: the new web".
Although the registration was full 12 hours after opening, I managed to get a spot by using a poster presenter slot.
My
poster is entitled "A Wiki test tracking solution", and focuses on the
collaboration and social implicattions of using a wiki to track the
testing phase of a software product.
Regarding the conference, it has a very interesting program, with the featured speakers:

  • Sam Ruby, IBM - "Teenager on the go"
  • Rob Miller, MIT - "Automization and Customization of Rendered Web Pages"
  • Stewart Butterfiled, Yahoo, Flickr co-founder - "Flickr and the User"
  • Ross Mayfield , SocialText - "New Paradigms in Social Computing"
  • Tom Gruber, RealTravel.com - "The people-powered web"

Innovation That Matters!

Tags: , , ,

Las friday was day of interesting events here at work. Besides the
World Cup opening game during the morning, on the afternoon we had a
poster session with the subject "Innovation that Matters", to conclude
a week full of talks and presentations dedicated to the subject
Innovation. Although I’m still a freshman in the company, I decided it
was time to start participating (not as attendant) in this events.

wiki_test_tracking_1.jpgSo,
I decided to create a poster to show some of the work i have been doing
in my extra time: a Wiki Test Tracking Solution. Just like the
development process, the test process involves many resources, and most
of the time this resources are spread over different repositories and
tools, being hard to manage. Other issue we had faced last year was how
to keep tracking of the testing progress. Not happy with the process in
the past, I worked with my team to create a solution to this problem.
The result, use our team’s wiki as the infrastructure to contain all
the information about the test project. Changing most of the resources
to wiki, we eliminate the use of Lotus Notes, Excel, Word and others,
as tools and repositories for information. The only issue was that
there was nothing in our wiki that would allow us to keep track of the
testing weekly progress. This was where I really spent my overtime. The
wiki engine we are using is TWiki, and it’s easy integration of plugins
convinced me to develop a plugin to test the weekly progress of our
team.

Programming Perl

Tags: , , , ,

I have finally decided to learn Perl. I like to be constantly learning new programming languages, and I’ve been delaying my Perl introduction for a long long time.
I want to develop a TWiki
plugin to track the progress of our product testing and, since TWiki is
written in Perl, this will be my opportunity to learn and practice the
language.
Besides using some ideas and code from TWiki’s Project Planner Plugin,
I also bought a Perl book, for those moments when I want to really
understand things instead of just copy and paste from the web.
0596000278.01._AA_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpgI was indecisive between the books "Learning Perl" and "Programming Perl",
and my choice was the second one. Since somebody at work already has
the first one, we can now share our books when needed (we are both Perl
newbies :-)).
The book came from Barnes & Noble, with a 20% company’s discount.
